Chemical Handling – Sulfuric Acid Transfer in Laboratory
Industry: Chemical Manufacturing · Country: Germany · Location: Quality Control Laboratory – Building C
Risk assessment for the transfer and dilution of concentrated sulfuric acid (98%) in the QC laboratory. Tasks include receiving, storing, and handling corrosive chemicals in accordance with GHS and REACH regulations.
Task Steps
- Review Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before handling
- Inspect chemical containers for damage or leaks
- Don full PPE: face shield, acid-resistant gloves, apron
- Transfer acid using designated acid-resistant pump
- Dilute by adding acid to water (never water to acid)
- Label all containers with GHS-compliant labels
- Store in designated acid cabinet with spill containment
- Dispose of waste in labelled hazardous waste containers
Risk Assessment (1 risks)
Risk #1 — Chemical (high, score 10)
Hazard: Skin or eye contact with concentrated sulfuric acid
Consequences: Severe chemical burns, permanent eye damage, blindness
Control measures:
- Full PPE mandatory: face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and apron
- Emergency eyewash station within 10 seconds travel distance
- Fume hood used for all open transfers
- Buddy system enforced when handling concentrated acids
- Annual chemical handling competency assessment
