A massive flood of mud, water and ice came rushing down from high in the Himalayas on Wednesday, tearing through a mountain valley along the Nepal-Tibet border. The flood moved so fast that people had little time to react, destroying buildings, snapping bridges apart and sweeping away people who were trying to escape. At least 160 people have been killed and hundreds more are still missing. Entire multistory buildings were ripped from their foundations, while men, women and children were caught in the rushing water and debris. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue crews continue searching the devastated area. As many as 391 tourists, including 291 foreigners, had been reported missing in Nepal, the country’s tourism board said in a statement. They included more than 100 people on a pilgrimage from India, a dozen Britons and at least three Americans. Citizens from Australia, the Netherlands, Malaysia and South Africa were also among the missing.
